Stop Waiting for Permission: The Mindset Shift That Actually Moves Your Career
You're stuck because you're waiting. Here's how I went from passive to active—and why asking messy questions beats silence every time.
I used to get stuck and just... sit there.
Not literally. I'd look busy. But mentally, I was frozen. Afraid to ask questions because asking meant admitting I didn't know. Afraid to take on extra work because I was already struggling. Afraid to be vulnerable with my team.
A year ago, I switched teams. Same company, different manager, different vibe. That's when everything flipped.
The Old Way: Passive Until It Costs You
On my old team, I'd get blocked and wait. Silently. My manager knew what I was supposed to do, but not what I actually did day-to-day—even with weekly one-on-ones. When new projects came around and they'd ask if I had capacity to explore something new, I'd say no. Not because the answer was actually no, but because I felt unprepared. I wasn't ready. I might fail.
That habit cost me. Once people know you won't step up, they stop asking. They stop thinking of you for growth opportunities. It's not malicious. It's just how trust works—in reverse.
The Shift: Do It Now, Do It Fast, Don't Aim for Perfect
My new team communicates constantly. Standups. Story reviews. Slack. No formal one-on-ones, just constant contact. It forced me to change.
Here's what actually happened:
I started asking questions like I meant them. Not "Can you help me, I'm stuck?" but "Here's what I tried, here's what I read, it didn't work—what's your approach?" There's a difference. The first is passive. The second shows effort and creates natural urgency to help you.
I took on the smallest viable step. I only have about an hour a night for my personal brand, so I ask myself: What's the one thing I can do right now that moves this forward? Submit the code change. Write the test. Ask the question today. Then I get time back while waiting for reviews. I'm not blocking myself.
I applied this to work immediately. Before standup or meetings, I'd ask: What's the minimal thing I can commit to? If I'm blocked on one story, I ask my manager: "Hey, I'm waiting on the app team. Is there anything else I can take on to hit story points while I wait?" There's zero downside. Either I finish the new task and deliver more value, or I don't—but I showed initiative either way. Either way, I'm not idle.
I started saying yes to new work. When they ask "Can you explore this?" the old me said "I'll see when I finish my priorities." Now I say yes. Worst case: I learn something and admit it was harder than expected. Best case: I expand what I can do.
Why This Works
Being passive feels safe. It feels like you're not risking failure. But you're actually risking invisibility.
When you ask messy questions, share half-finished work, and say yes to things you're not 100% sure about, something shifts. People see effort. They see vulnerability. They start trusting you not because you're perfect, but because you're real and you're trying.
And that's when opportunities come back around.
The mindset isn't "Do everything perfectly." It's "Do something now. Do it fast. Iterate." It applies to learning a new stack, a new role, code reviews, asking for help—everything.
You don't have to volunteer for more work constantly. But in how you communicate, how you engage, how you submit your work—be active. Build small wins. Build confidence. Build a foundation.
That's the shift. That's what moved me forward.
