Low Autonomy, High Stress, and Why That's Actually the Part That Matters
You're in the unglamorous phase of learning a new role with no autonomy. Here's why that's not failure—and how to survive it.
I'm going to be real: I'm in one of the hardest phases of my career right now, and I almost didn't want to talk about it publicly.
I switched into SRE. Everything takes forever. I'm on walkthroughs with senior engineers constantly. I missed a story point last sprint because I refused to ship code I didn't fully understand. I'm staying 8 to 4 with barely any breaks. The stress is leaking into everything—including the side projects and content I care about. And the deeper fear? I don't have anything impressive to show right now.
The Stress Is Real, But It's Not a Warning Sign
Here's what I realized: I was treating the struggle like a sign I wasn't good enough. Like if I were actually capable, I'd be moving faster, shipping more, looking like I knew what I was doing.
That's backwards.
The slow part—the part where you need guidance on every ticket, where you can't explain your own changes yet, where you're asking "why" ten times a day—that's not a bug in your growth. That's the actual growth happening.
How I'm Actually Making Progress (It's Unglamorous)
I'm explaining my work out loud, even when I don't fully get it yet. During story review, I walk through what I did. The act of explaining forces the concepts to stick. I don't need to understand everything before I ship anymore—I just need to understand it by the time I talk about it.
I'm asking clarifying questions relentlessly. Not just "how do I do this task" but "how would you do this? What's your mental model here?" The people who help me aren't annoyed. They're building relationship capital with me, and I'm building actual understanding instead of just getting unstuck.
I'm not leaning on AI the way I used to. As a full stack dev, I'd throw problems at Claude and move on. Now? I'm doing the slower work—reading docs, following walkthroughs, asking humans. It feels less efficient. It's actually more effective.
You're Not Behind. You're in the Part That Counts.
The part nobody films is the part that matters most. Most creators show the wins—the shipped feature, the solved problem, the moment it clicked. They skip the weeks where you're slow and dependent and stressed.
If I only showed my wins, I'd be another polished guru with a highlight reel. That's not what this is.
Work is already getting better because of how I'm adapting. I have low autonomy, but the foundation is building. I can feel it.
